The Blue Club’s Statement on new Abortion Laws in Alabama, Ohio, and Georgia.
The abortion laws being passed by Republican-held State Legislatures across the nation, particularly in Alabama, Ohio, and Georgia are both represenhensible and unconstitutional. They are simply illogical and taking our nation a step away from progressivism and equal rights.
It is the duty of the government to protect the rights of the individual, not to violate them. While the concept of popular sovereignty exists and is still highly contested, the Constitution is still the supreme law of the land and these acts are in violation of it.
Defending the rights of women is of the utmost importance if we wish to progress as a nation. Barring those who wish to get an abortion from doing so — be they underage, rape victims, or ordinary adults — is in violation of our key beliefs in progress and civil rights. It is criminal to form innocent rape victims and those who suffer from miscarriages to face jail time, as is possible by these new laws.
The legislators responsible for these laws claim to be defending those who are not yet here to defend themselves. They call it compassion, but what it really is is control. They wish to control women’s bodies and what they do with them.
While this is clearly a ploy to get the Supreme Court to challenge Roe V. Wade, these acts will have devastating consequences for the citizens of Alabama, Ohio, and Georgia. The Senators and Representatives in these states have taken a stance against the rights of women and, by extension, women themselves.
Should this law find itself subject to the review of the Supreme Court, we urge the Justices — especially Chief Justice Roberts — to defend the rights of women and reaffirm the supremacy of the Constitution.
